Q. I have 25 years of service with the Postal Service. I am extremely ill and have been told by my doctor that I would need to consider disability retirement. My base pay is $57,000 per year. Could you please tell me what my disability retirement will be?
A. If you were approved for disability retirement, for the first 12 months, you’d receive 60 percent of your high-3 average salary minus 100 percent of any Social Security disability benefit. After the first 12 months, you’d receive 40 percent of your high-3, minus 60 percent of any Social Security disability benefit. Note: You must apply for Social Security disability benefits, otherwise the Office of Personnel Management won’t process your application.
