Q. I am 60 years old and have been with the federal government for 15 years. Do my age and years combined not quality me for early buy out? Will I quality for all retirement benefits?

A. There are no age and service limits on a Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment. So you could accept a buyout it one were offered to you. While you don’t meet either of the age and service requirements to retire on an immediate unreduced annuity, which are age 60 with 20 years of service or age 62 with five years, you could retire under the MRA+10 provision. However, your annuity would be reduced by 5 percent for every year (5/12 percent per month) you are under age 62.

  1. This person could also elect to postpone receiving their FERS retirement annuity till age 62 to avoid early retirement penalty when they leave civil service. Folks who are MRA+10 have option of postponing their FERS retirement annuity to lessen or avoid penalty. Also person can keep/resume their FEHB and FEGLI benefits if they postpone FERS under MRA+10.
