Q. I will have 30 years of service in October 2018, but I will only be 55 years old as of Aug. 29, 2018. I am so ready to retire — with the stress of the U.S. Postal Service and my family stresses, I cant endure another year of service. Can I retire in October 2018?
A. No, you can’t. What you could do is resign from the government and apply for a deferred annuity when you reach your minimum retirement age, which is 56. Just be aware that you wouldn’t be able to re-enroll in either the FEHB or FEGLI programs when you annuity begins.
