Social Security

Q. I’m 66 years old still working in federal service, at the Department of Defense, under the CSRS plan. Will I get full Social Security benefit because I’m still working? I’m planning on retiring from federal service at the age of 70.

A. Because you have reached full Social Security retirement age, you won’t be subject to the Social Security earnings test. You can receive both your salary and a Social Security benefit. However, when you retire and begin receiving a CSRS annuity, that Social Security benefit will be subject to the windfall elimination provision, which will reduce – but not eliminate – that benefit. For more information about the WEP and how it would affect you, go to https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10045.pdf.
