FEHB eligibility

Q. I’m a 20-plus-year employee who left federal service before minimum retirement age. What type of appointment, and for how long, would I need to once again be FEHB eligible?

A. You’d need to be hired into a position that would allow you to enroll in the FEHB program. If you had been enrolled in the program when you left and immediately re-enrolled after being hired, your coverage would be viewed as continuous. That’s important, because you’d need to be enrolled in the FEHB program for the five consecutive years before you retire to carry that coverage into retirement.
