Q. I am an 083 series DA police officer nearing retirement. I believed the retirement requirement for federal law enforcement officers was the same as federal firefighters in that retirement was mandatory at age 57. Our SF 50s indicate that we are not emergency-essential, but our installation says we are and maintains requirements as though we are — e.g., we cannot be released when the post shuts down early for severe weather, we work weekends and holidays, and we are expected to go to work when the installation is closed and winter driving advisories are in effect. What federal and/or…

Q. I am a GS employee who was fully employed by my agency from 1992 to July 2004 and then involuntarily recalled to active duty (reservist), title 10, for two years. I am still affiliated with the agency and have an active SF-50. I am also still on active duty, but on voluntary orders with a five-year limit. Can I buy back my Title 10 military service for a FERS employee while on LWOP-US or annual leave while on voluntary military orders? The result would be 14 years of federal service, to include two years of military service and 12…

Q. I’m in CSRS. In the 1980s, I worked part time for a few years, and my SF-50 shows part time, 32 hours a pay period. I saved all of my leave and earnings statements, which show that I actually put in 70 hours per pay period. How will this service be viewed for retirement calculation purposes? This situation doesn’t fit into an electronic calculator! A. The method used to compute part-time service is at www.opm.gov/retire/pubs/handbook/C055.pdf. Scroll to Part 55B2. Although this applies to FERS employees, as the result of a recent court case, it also now applies to CSRS.

Q. I am working under a non-6c-covered law enforcement position and will turn 37 at the end of this year. I am working on finishing my degree and would like to move into an 1811 position, but the timing will not permit my movement directly into that series. If I move into a 6c position before my 37th birthday, will I be eligible to transfer into an 1811 position (FBI)? I have been looking for an answer for a few days and haven’t had much luck. HR folks at FBI were not sure but did say my SF-50 would have…

Q: I was reinstated on a term appointment in 2003, and in 2005 the position was terminated. I took a permanent position with Bureau of Land Management. While in my term position, I was told to sign up for the Federal Employees Retirement System or my time would not count toward my tenure in this term position. I was told that when my term appointment ended and I accepted a permanent position, my tenure would continue and I could, at this time 2005-2008, opt to be reinstated as CSRS/FERS instead of FERS. I had requested to my BLM human resources…
