Q. I am 54 years old, retired from the military (20 years) and have worked for the Defense Logistics Agency for five years. What is the minimum retirement age under FERS?

A. The simple answer is 56. However, retirement eligibility is based on a combination of age and service. Here are the options for immediate retirement:

* Age 62 with five years of service

* 60 with 20

* MRA with 30

* MRA with 10 (but with reduced benefits)

Early retirement is permitted if you are voluntarily or involuntarily separated during a major reorganization or reduction in force:

* Age 50 with 20

* Any age with 25

Note: To be eligible to retire you would need to have at least five years of actual FERS service.
