Q. I am 54 years of age (born Dec. 2, 1958) and under FERS. I have 27 years of federal service. Can I:

1. Resign today and postpone receipt of my pension until I have 30 years of service?

2. Retire today and start receiving my pension? What penalty would I receive?

A. 1. If you resigned today, you would be eligible for a deferred annuity at age 60.

2. You aren’t eligible to retire because you haven’t reached your minimum retirement age, which is 56.
