Windfall elimination provision

Q. I have worked for the Postal Service for 20 years under FERS and planned on retiring next year. My husband retired several years ago from the Postal Service under CSRS. Will I be able to collect my full Social Security benefits, or will I be subject to the WEP? I have heard conflicting statements.

A. There shouldn’t be any conflicting statements. As a FERS employee, you are entitled to the full Social Security benefit you earned. If you retire before age 62, the special retirement supplement you receive will approximate the amount of Social Security benefit you earned while a FERS employee. At age 62 (or when you retire, if after that), you’ll receive a Social Security benefit that includes all of your Social Security-covered employment.
