Q: I retired from the Navy after 20 years of service. I was on active duty for eight years and then on reserve active duty for 12. I am 47 and receiving retirement pay. Since I retired as a reserve (my DD 214 shows component/branch as “U.S. Navy-USNR”), can I buy back my time and put it toward my Federal Employees Retirement System retirement?  A: You may make a deposit for any period(s) of active-duty service. If you do, that time will be used in determining your length or service and in your annuity calculation. Making a deposit for that…

Q: I retired from the Navy after serving 20 years. I now work for the state of Georgia. Will my service in state government be the same as working for the federal government? Can I receive a pension from the state after 10 years (which will be 30 years of total service, in 2018)? A: No, it won’t be the same as working for the federal government. The two forms of employment aren’t interchangeable. You’ll have to check with your state to find out if any of your military service would be creditable and what the requirements are to retire…

Q. I am a 52-year-old dual-status military technician with the Army Reserve.  I have 32 years of qualifying military service with the Reserve, thus making me eligible to retire and become eligible to draw military retired pay at age 60.  I began my FERS service as a military technician Feb. 11, 1985, and have 30 years of qualifying FERS service as of Dec. 8 as a result of buying back my active military service. My question is this?  If I voluntarily retire from my military job, does this qualify me for the discontinued service retirement with no penalties? I have…

Q. I served 14 years active duty in the military and got out under Higher Tenure for which I received Involuntary Separation Pay. Now I’m receiving 40 percent disability from the VA, and in the reserves and planning on retiring from there once I reach 20 years. In addition, I just started working for the VA, and planning on buying back my military time. Can I receive retirement from both the VA and the reserves? How early can I retire from the VA? And how is the Involuntary Separation Pay and the disability affect all of this? A. Yes, if…

Q. I was active-duty military (Title 10) from 1987 to 1999. I became a military technician in 1999 under FERS and am currently still buying back those 11 years of active duty. I recently took an AGR (Title 32) position with the National Guard after 10 years of federal service as a military technician. At age 56 I intend to retire with 20 years of active duty as an AGR. This coincides with my federal MRA+10 (age 56 years). Can I collect a FERS retirement and a military retirement? Is there a particular strategy I should employ with these two retirements? i.e. submit…

Q. I retired from the Air Force after 30 years. I’m currently a civil servant under the FERS system. I’ve been told that military retirees are entitled to accrue annual leave at a higher rate because they are military retirees. Is there any truth to this? Where would I find the guidance for this rule? A. Annual leave accrual credit is given to retired military personnel only for actual service during a war declared by Congress or while participating in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge is authorized.

Q. I have prior active-duty service with the Army (three years). I have been working for the federal government (civil service) for 10 years and I recently joined the Army National Guard. Does all my time count toward the Guard for pay and retirement since the Guard is a state and federal agency. A. Unless you are called to active duty, your National Guard service won’t be creditable for any civilian employment or retirement purposes. You’ll have to check with your National Guard unit to determine which periods of service, if any, are creditable for National Guard purposes.

Q. I was activated to military service in February and just returned home.  I’m currently a civil service employee.  I was told that I’m not able to accrue vacation or sick leave during this period; is this correct? A. Yes, that’s correct

Q. I am receiving retirement pay after 27 years in the Army. I will soon be moving to a GS position. My question is: Does my four years of time at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) count as creditable time for leave accrual purposes? A. No.

Q. My husband is eligible to retire from the military at age 38 with 20 years of service in a few months. One of the options he is looking at is a federal job. He has been told if he goes back to work for the federal government after retiring from the military, he will not be eligible for full retirement from both the military and FERS. Will his annuity from one agency be reduced once he retires for the second time? A. If he retires from the military and takes a civilian job with the federal government, he will be…
