Q. I am CSRS Offset; how is sick leave figured into the equation? A. After you meet the age and service requirements to retire, any unused sick leave is added to your actual service and used in the computation of your annuity.

Q. Can my accumulated sick leave be used to meet my time for 20 years? I am 68 and eligible for retirement, even though I have not reached 20 years of government service. If I retire in January 2015, I will have more than nine months of sick leave. Adding the nine months would take me to September 2015, which would give me 20 years. I have been told by my local personnel office that I will get credit for 20 years, but my interpretation is that I would not. A. Unused sick leave can not be used to increase…

Q. Is it true that to receive credit for annual leave and sick leave for the final pay period upon retiring, you must work all 14 days of the final pay period (and thus retire on the last day of the final pay period)? If you retire on the first to 13th day of a pay period, will you receive no annual leave or sick leave credit for the final pay period? A. To receive any credit for annual and sick leave earned during a pay period, you must complete your tour of duty during that pay period. For most…

Q. Hi, I’m a former student employee with the Department of Defense. The student program I was in was cut, and my annual leave was cashed out. My boss told me that she would put me on sick leave to use up my hours, but I still have a balance. How can I get these hours cashed out? A. You can’t. Unused sick leave has no cash value.

Q. I want to receive the 1.1 percent enhanced multiplier of 20 years of retirement at age 65 versus 1 percent. I started work May 9, 1993 (service computation date is May 28, 1992). I will have 360 days’ sick leave when I retire. I realize only half of my sick leave is computed for retirement purposes before 2014. I would like to retire either April 7 or April 21, 2013, but only if I get full credit for 20 years of service under FERS. Do I have to wait until May 9, 2013, to qualify for 1.1 percent enhanced…

Q. I’m an electronic technician with the Postal Service and applied for a electronic technician position with the FAA. If I were offered the job, would my time carry over? If my current pay is between the pay scales, is it matched to what I currently make? Since I’m already a federal employee, I wouldn’t need to go through probation again, right? Where can I find out the pay scales and how much annual and sick leave are accrued? Should I know or consider any other information? A. Your years of service, leave accrual rate and TSP investments would transfer…

Q. I am in CSRS and plan to retire at 4:30 pm. May 3. I will have my 80 hours in by that time. My three questions: 1. Do I enter the date May 3, 2013, in Block B Question 2 of the retirement form (SF-2801) as my “Final date of separation”? I think I read an article that there is a difference between a retirement date and the final date of separation. 2. Will I earn eight hours of annual leave for that pay period? 3. Will my annuity start on May 4, with my first check received in…

Q. How does the new law that provides sick leave credit for longevity operate with immediate, postponed and deferred retirement? Can you get this sick leave credit for service longevity under each of these three categories of retirement? A. No. It only applies to immediate and postponed annuities. The latter is included because it’s actually an immediate annuity, where the receipt of the annuity is postponed to a later date.
