Survivor annuity and Social Security

Q. I am a federal employee under CSRS for 40 years. When I am receiving pension, am I eligible to get half of my husband’s Social Security benefit? And if he dies before me, will I be able to collect his Social Security benefit?

A. Any spousal or survivor’s Social Security benefit would be affected by the government pension offset provision of law. It would reduce that Social Security benefit by $2 for every $3 you receive in your CSRS annuity.
