Q. I was an air traffic controller for 19 years 9 months and am now on a FERS disability annuity. If I am reading BAL 10-105 correctly, my annuity should be computed at 1.7 percent instead of the 1.0 or 1.1 percent I am currently receiving. Is that correct? Also, at age 62 what will happen? At that age I would have 41 years of service. I also question MRAs and the age of 62 for calculations for air traffic controllers. I was eligible for a full FERS retirement at 46 (25 years service). The maximum age to work as…

Q. I am planning to retire ASAP but am working out a few issues. I do not want the early retirement penalty (5/12 percent per month) to impact my retirement compensation so understanding how my military time rolls toward my retirement will dictate when I can retire. I will have 27 years of FERS service and four years of paid military time. I will have met my MRA of 57.6 yrs. Does my military credit count toward the 30 years required service time or does my military time only count toward my annuity computation? If it only counts toward the…

Q. I am currently under FERS with 20.5 years of service and am age 55. My MRA age is 56. Can I apply for the deferred retirement to age 62 before I resign? I realize I will not be eligible for the health and life insurance. A. No, you can’t. You can only resign from the government and later apply for a deferred retirement when you are eligible for that benefit, which would be age 60.

Q. I am 37 and have been in the Navy 20 years. I have begun the hiring process with the U.S. Border Patrol. I am an E-8. Should I try and buy back my years in military, which should cost about $8,000? Can I defer receipt of military retirement until I retire from the Border Patrol? I am also curious about the amount of buyback. Is it based on my rate of E-8 or on the total amount I made? Due to my billet and frequent deployments, I made twice what the base pay might be. I spent a lot…

Q. I resigned under FERS at age 52 with 30 years of service. Can I put in at age 56 and 2 months for collecting my retirement? A. If you were born in 1965, you would be entitled to an immediate unreduced annuity when you reach your minimum retirement age, which is age 56 and 2 months. Note: As a deferred annuitant, you wouldn’t be entitled to the special retirement supplement. Reg Jones is away until May 2. Q. My husband and I were both federal employees and took the Voluntary Early Retirement Authority. The minimum retirement age for both of us is age 56. Will we both be eligible to receive the special retirement supplement at the MRA, or will only one of us receive the supplement at MRA? A. You will both be eligible for the SRS when you reach your MRA. Reg Jones is away until May 2. Q. I am a FERS employee with 18 years of service. I am retired military with 20 years of service that I bought back soon after I became a FERS employee. I turn 56 this year. Am I entitled to the special retirement supplement and, if so, how would I calculate the amount? My question is based on guidance I was provided that stated the requirement for the SRS is “Retirement at MRA with 30 years” or “Retirement at age 60 with 20 years” … but only true FERS time counts, not military time.
