Q. I served five years on active duty before becoming a federal employee. Can you please explain the reasons for and advantages to buying credit for military service as a federal employee? Since I was hired two years ago, I’ve been receiving four extra hours of annual leave each month because of my military service. Is this related to the buyback program?

Q. I am on leave without pay and Department of Labor workers’ compensation due to an injury which occurred on duty as a federal agent. I had surgery 16 months ago. I am still having issues that prevent me from returning to work at this time. I am undergoing physical therapy and pain management. Doctors are recommending more surgeries, epidural treatments, PT, etc. Keeping in mind that additional surgeries and epidurals may not be beneficial and come with additional risks, do I have to take the doctors’ recommendations?  Do I have the option to say I have had enough poking…

Q. I am 61 years old. I will have 30 years with the Postal Service on April 9. I have 735 hours of unused sick leave on the books. I am on workers’ compensation, still a USPS employee and on leave without pay. Can I retire (NOT disability retirement) right now and use my unused sick leave hours to reach to my full 30-year retirement date of April 9?

Q. I recently received six months of credit for a Veterans Affairs Department internship I did in 1990-91, added to my service computation date. My federal job began in March 2008, but my SCD is now September 2007. I know that periods of nondeduction service performed on or after Jan. 1, 1989, aren’t creditable for retirement purposes. So what value, if any, does it have for my SCD to now be six months greater than my retirement SCD?

Q. I read on your site that leave without pay under six months in a calendar year counts as creditable service.  But I also read where it doesn’t count toward the retirement calculation. I am CSRS but only have 19 years of law enforcement officer status as of June 10, 2014. Can I take a few months of LWOP in 2014 and 2015 and have this time count toward my 20-year LEO retirement computation if the LWOP is under six months in 2014 and under six months in 2015? Will the LWOP time under six months in each of these…

 Q. I’ve been a federal employee since 2010. I recently paid off my military buyback. I’m eligible for retirement through the Army Reserve. My human resources person just told me that if I retire from the Reserve, all the buyback time I have toward my civilian retirement (leave accrual, step increases, etc.), I lose all of that. In other words, I should not have bought back my military time because I cannot receive military reserve retirement and apply that time to my federal civilian service. Is that true? If so, can I get back the money I put into the…

 Q. I am a former federal employee. I have been separated from my agency for 40 days. I received my clearance upon separation. At the time of my separation, I had 346 hours of unused annual leave. I have tried to get paid for my annual leave, but I am being given the run around by my agency’s Pay, Benefit, and Retirement Division. What are my options, and whom do I contact to get my money?
