Q. I am an employee under FERS. How will my approximately 700 hours of unused sick leave count toward my total service when I retire in 2014? My service computation date is March 3, 1994, and I will be 62 years old when I plan to retire in March. If I retire Jan. 10, will my 700 hours of unused sick hours count toward my desired target of 20+ years of service, or must I wait until March 3 to hit the 20-year threshold?

Q. After working for the Postal Service for 20 years, I left service in 2004. I started as an RCR in 1984, and later became an RCA. In 1995, I became a rural carrier full time and was in FERS for nine years. I heard that I can buy more years for my retirement calculations. I turn 62 in December. How do I find out what buying some years will cost, and what forms will I need to have everything ready for December?

Q. I separated under FERS in 2001 and just started receiving my pension. When I noticed it didn’t include my active-duty time, I learned that I had to have bought that back before I separated. I don’t recall anybody ever mentioning this. What’s the reasoning behind not letting people buy back after they’ve retired? Is there any way I can still buy it back?

Q. I am a FERS civilian employee with 27 years combined military/civilian service. I was placed on indefinite suspension. I waived my right to appeal. I have no intention of returning to federal service, and I would like to know if I can request (and be granted) removal from federal service? Do I have options for separation other than to await the disposition of the matter that caused the suspension?

Q. I plan on applying soon for a FERS deferred annuity. Nowhere have I read whether the Office of Personnel Management actually purchases an annuity from a private insurance company, creates its own version of annuities, or a FERS deferred annuity is simply a transfer of monies out of the General Fund (tax payments)? Please explain whether a FERS annuity is a private annuity contract, a public contract or just another tax payment transfer program (like the Social Security Administration). If it is private, what insurance company is used?  If it is public, is this just another transfer program from…

Q. Are there any differences between a FERS early retirement and an immediate retirement? During a reduction in force, can you retire before your minimum retirement age for both under early retirement and immediate retirement? For example, can you retire at age 53 with 30 years in FERS without any age reduction penalties to your annuity under both early retirement and immediate retirement? Which type of retirement is more appropriate for the previous example?
