Q. I am a military reservist with more than 20 reserve and 17 active years. I was hired into GS about six months ago. I have calculated my military buyback and am prepared to buy it back (roughly $18,000). My breakeven is about 17 months after I retire at age 62 for the $18,000. So it is definitely worth it. I am considering going back to the private sector, where I should make at a minimum 1½ to two times what I make as a GS employee (I work in the IT field). I have crunched the numbers and the…

Q. I am recovered from the disability for which I obtained my FERS disability retirement. Should I send my retirement papers along with a letter from my doctor to the Office of Personnel Management retirement section?  I am 57 with 21 years of FERS civil service, and I bought back six years of active duty. I have been on FERS retirement since 2007.

 Q. I was born in 1963 and am retired Air Force with 20 years and four months active duty (Dec. 9, 1981-April 1, 2002). I am also a civil service employee (April 8, 2002-present). How do I calculate if it’s worth it to buy back my 20 years and four months of military service? How can I compare what I will be getting — keeping the two retirements separate vs. waiving my military retirement check and adding that time to my civil service retirement? If I buy back the military time, does it then adjust my civil service start date…

Q. I am 46 years old. I have 18 years with the U.S. Marshals Service as a criminal investigator. I also have 6½ years with the Army. At 48, I will fulfill my 20 years of covered federal law enforcement time. Do my additional years in the military put me through the 25-year window and allow me to retire at 48 with full benefits, or do I still have to wait until I am 50?

Q. I am 63 years old with more than 43 years of creditable service under CSRS and plan on retiring next year. I retired from the Air National Guard as a traditional guardsman with 39 years of service and am receiving my Guard pension. The only active service time I had was my initial five months of training, which I never bought back. I am eligible for Social Security, and I am looking into the cost of buying that military time. But since I am already past the 41-year, 11-month mark for the 80 percent maximum payable annuity, I am…

 Q. I need to clarify my situation on military buyback into FERS as I keep getting conflicting answers. I am an Army reservist: 28 years of service with 24 active duty (365 days per year). I would like to enter government service. I know I cannot buy back my 24 years and receive both retirements once I am receiving my retirement pay. However, in the government employee book, it says I can buy back up to all of my active service as long as I am not collecting my military retirement. So if I am hired tomorrow, while on terminal…

Q. I have 12 years of military service that I bought back. I have 16 years in federal law enforcement, with that law enforcement coverage as primary retirement coverage. I just turned 52 and have been in federal service since April 27, 1997. My position was just reclassified within my agency and is now covered under secondary law enforcement retirement coverage. Do I have sufficient time in to retire immediately now that I am covered under secondary law enforcement retirement, or do I need to still work another four years to get 20 in the position?
