Q. I retired as a master sergeant in the Army with 25 years of active-duty service. I currently collect my Army retirement check and disability from the Department of Veterans Affairs. I have been a FERS GG-12 for nine years. I believe I can buy back my military retirement time with interest and that would be added to my civilian FERS time. When do I have to relinquish my military retirement check: when I retire into FERS or when I have bought back my time?

Q. I have around 13 years active Army and three years Army National Guard time total. I was a sergeant when I separated in October 2011 from the Army. I just accepted a position at the U.S. Postal Service. How much will it cost me to buy back my military time, or is it even worth it? Would that mean I now would have 13-16 years with the post office counting toward my retirement? Does buying time back do anything for your new or current pay grade in a federal job? Does it count toward leave accruals?

Q. I have a total of 18 years of active duty and reserve time, and I will be retiring in two years once I complete my 20 years of service. I am currently a civil employee. Do I buy back my military time toward FERS civilian service or do I hold up and completely retire from the military and then buy back the civil service time?

Q. I was active duty from 1984 to 1992, then employed by the Department of Justice in 1993 until 2016. (I bought back my military active service and had it applied toward my Office of Personnel Management retirement.) In 2001 I joined the National Guard. Currently, my commander wants to place me on Active Guard Reserve orders. Is this authorized? I called OPM and they said yes, but the National Guard needs proof. Can you direct me to the policy?

Q. I have 6 years and 3 months active duty service. I received an honorable discharge in 11/2014 and got out as an E-5. I was rated 70 percent with my branch of service and 80 percent with the VA. In 09/2018, I started working for the USDA as a GS 7. I was told that I would be able to retire and collect a retirement pension in about 14 years from this (or any) government agency due to my previous military service if I buy back my service time. Is this true? Also, if that is true, will I…

Q. I am a dentist starting with the Federal Bureau of Prisons at age 43 with an age exemption. I have approximately 10 years of military years to buy back. If the mandatory retirement age of the BOP is 57, how can I retire from an agency in 20 years at age 63, add my military 10 years for a total of 30 years, and still receive the law enforcement 1.7 percent retirement calculation?
