Q. I’m about to turn 55 in May and will have 20 years at a quasi-government agency (Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.) under FERS in July. My benefit statement indicates that I am eligible for ‘Voluntary Early or Discontinued’ in July with the early retirement if my agency has authority. The agency is reorganizing and human resources advised that they have sought approval from the Office of Personnel Management to offer buyouts and were awaiting a response from OPM. But HR was not sure how selectively my agency would offer them or whether they would only be offered to specific (and…

Q. I plan to retire at age minimum retirement age of 56, with 34 years of service and received an estimate of FERS annuity plus special retirement supplement. The estimate only shows deductions for federal tax and maximum survivor benefit election from the base FERS annuity but no deductions from the special retirement supplement. Can you verify that the special retirement supplement is not federally taxed?
Q. I am under FERS and my agency is offering a buyout under which you must retire by May 31. If I retire based on the buyout, I will receive a lump-sum payment in addition to the special retirement supplement. I understand the SRS may be eliminated per the current budget bill. The budget bill states the SRS will be eliminated for those who retire after Jan. 1, 2014. Will the elimination of the SRS, if passed, be grandfathered in where it could affect those who are already receiving the supplement, and/or for those who start to receive the supplement…
Q. I will be 45 in June, and I will have 21 years in September. When can I retire?
Q. I was injured on the job while working for the federal government and spent 26 years as an annuitant under the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs. Recently, I was terminated from OWCP as being recovered from my work-related injury and retired under CSRS as a disability retiree. When I received my first retirement check, I noticed that federal taxes had been deducted. Is this correct? I had thought that disability retirement annuities were not taxable. Will these tax deductions end at some time in the future, perhaps at my minimum retirement age? I will be 68 years old in…
Q. I retired from the Senate at 50 with 21 years of service. Am I eligible for the special retirement supplement at my minimum retirement age of 56?
Q. I am an 1811 criminal investigator with 21 years of covered law enforcement service. I am 48. Have I locked in my law enforcement retirement such that I can pursue another noncovered federal job while maintaining the option to retire when I turn 50?
Q. I am 51 and retired with 22 years with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In our agency, we could retire at age 50 with 20 years of service or at any age with 25 years of service. Our maximum retirement age is 57. I thought I understood from retirement training that in our special circumstances, earnings rules did not apply until we reached age 57, or when we would have been forced to retire. In other words, after early but full eligibility retirement, we could work and we would not be penalized or limited with new income, in that…
Q. I am a 20+-year retired veteran. I also receive Veterans Affairs disability compensation. I am considering a position with VA. How many years of employment before I am eligible to retire from VA? Will I continue to receive my above income, as well as my VA retirement?
Q. I am a FERS employee with 28 years of service and have met my minimum retirement age. I will not be eligible for full retirement for another two years when I am 60 and have 30 years of service. If I am offered a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay (I work for the Army), will I get an annuity reduction if the offer is not a reduction in force?
