Q. I began 6(c) coverage on Sept. 26, 1999; I was deployed by the Army Reserve for 18 months from May 2005 to September 2006. I am 48 years old. Do I have to do an extra 18 months to retire with 20 years of 6(c) coverage? I bought back the 18 months already and I began my scheduled leave on April 19, 1993, which already had been paid back.

Q. I am a CSRS employee approaching my 30-year service computation date and planning to retire shortly thereafter. I have not yet submitted retirement paperwork. Coincidentally, my agency has just indicated that within the next few weeks, I will receive a notification that I am eligible for an early-out with incentive. Do I need to separate from federal service prior to my 30 years of service date to be eligible for Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay? Anticipated date of VERA eligibility letter: July 22. SCD (30 years): Aug. 8.

Q. We are a gay couple of 18 years trying to decide if it makes practical sense to get married: Partner 1: CSRS, will max out with 40 years of federal service in two years. Partner 2: eight years of federal service under FERS; military reservist recalled to active duty in 2001, still on active duty. In two years, will be eligible for military pension (total reserve and active time will equal about 3/4 of an active-duty O-5 pension); will then return to federal service, put a military deposit on active-duty time and work four years to a minimum retirement…

Q. Can I draw two different retirement pays for the same period of service? I served for three years active duty in the Army Active (1971 to 1974), one year in the Air Force Reserve. Retired from Air Force Reserve in April 1993. At age 60, I started drawing reserve retirement (21 years with 2,500 points). I’m 61 with 31 years creditable time for CSRS. Can I buy back my three years Army active duty and apply this to my CSRS even though I’m already using this three years for Reserve retirement purposes?

Q. I just had a baby and plan on being a stay-at-home mom. However, I want to complete five years of service so I am vested in the pension plan, so I will be returning for three weeks after maternity leave to be eligible when I reach retirement age. I will have used one week of leave without pay. Does this count toward calculating my five years of service?

Q. I am a Postal Service CSRS employee with 41 years and 11 months of service. I will retire soon, never switched to FERS. The first two years were a part time job called “Postal Assistant,” requiring me to be a college student. The job allowed me to work a 16-hour week (Saturday and Sunday). My paychecks indicated an hourly wage rather than salary. A recent USPS computer-generated annuity estimate indicates those years as creditable but unfunded service. I have never made a deposit toward that time. The annuity estimate provided does not account for an annuity reduction due to…
