Q. I worked for the federal government as a civil servant from 1984 to 1989, when I resigned as a GS-13 to take a private-sector job. I am now considering a return to government service at the same grade/level as when I left. 1. Will the five years I worked previously be credited toward my retirement (anticipated in 2018) for a total of 10 years of service? I was under FERS for my previous five-year employment. 2. Will my vacation be reinstated at the same rate (hours per pay period) as when I left federal service?  I believe I was…

Q. I am recovered from the disability for which I obtained my FERS disability retirement. Should I send my retirement papers along with a letter from my doctor to the Office of Personnel Management retirement section?  I am 57 with 21 years of FERS civil service, and I bought back six years of active duty. I have been on FERS retirement since 2007.

Q. I recently received a letter from the Office of Personnel Management that I had gone over the 80 percent limit, and my FERS disability retirement was discontinued. OPM has quoted two different salary figures and different “earned income” in three letters that I received from them. Can you please help clarify as to how to calculate correct 80 percent limitation? Do you report net income under self-employment or gross? Does your earned income includes FERS retirement annuities?

 Q. I was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration in January 1985 and erroneously placed in FERS. I separated from the FAA in 1998. I have been looking at the information on the Office of Personnel Management website about eligibility, and it appears that I may be eligible for placement in CSRS. I’ve written to OPM for a review of my case as they suggested, but I wanted to get a third party opinion on the matter.

Q. I am 31 years old and have been employed by the Veterans Affairs Department under FERS for the past 10 years and 10 months. I resigned from my position because I unexpectedly had my third child and, for a few months, I was told I could drop down to part time. Then I was told that was no longer possible two months before the start of my maternity leave. Since cutting down my hours was no longer an option, I had to resign, and submitted the paperwork to withdraw my retirement. It took three months of waiting, and over…

Q. I worked for the Forest Service in high school in the summers of 1981 and 1982, then permanently in 1983. I was put on leave without pay in October 1983 due to lack of funds. I was under FICA retirement on my SF-50.  I joined the active-duty Air Force in January 1984 because I was unemployed. I spent 20 years with the Air Force, retired and started working for the Veterans Affairs Department. Would I qualify for CSRS? I was just told you are FERS, period. But that was before my Forest Service records were obtained to show previous…
