Q. I am 53 on disability retirement under CSRS. I have 29 years and six months. When I turn 55, can I convert to regular retirement? Also if the Postal Service offers an early-out, am I eligible?
Q. I have just been approved for Social Security disability. I also applied for FERS in March I was terminated for not following leave regulations because I couldn’t go to work. Should my FERS case go through because I was approved for SSDI, or will it still be a complicated procedure? It seems, if Social Security decided that I can’t work, I obviously can’t do the work I was doing at the Defense Finance and Accounting Services.
Q. I was hurt on the job as a federal worker. This injury has forced me to take a FERS disability retirement as I cannot perform my function. When I turn 62, do I lose my disability pay and must I rely on what normal retirement I would have had (not enough to live on)?
Q. I am recovered from the disability for which I obtained my FERS disability retirement. Should I send my retirement papers along with a letter from my doctor to the Office of Personnel Management retirement section? I am 57 with 21 years of FERS civil service, and I bought back six years of active duty. I have been on FERS retirement since 2007.
Q. I recently received a letter from the Office of Personnel Management that I had gone over the 80 percent limit, and my FERS disability retirement was discontinued. OPM has quoted two different salary figures and different “earned income” in three letters that I received from them. Can you please help clarify as to how to calculate correct 80 percent limitation? Do you report net income under self-employment or gross? Does your earned income includes FERS retirement annuities?
Q. If Social Security is not approved but disability retirement is, does that mean I only get the percentage of pay that the FERS disability retirement pays, or is there a procedure in place to make up for the Social Security disability?
Q. I retired on disability in 2008 in a 6(c) (law enforcement) position. I would have been eligible to retire this year (at age 52) had I not become disabled. When will my retirement be recalculated since I fall under the age 57 mandatory retirement?
Q. I am on a disability retirement after 32 years of CSRS service with the Postal Service. I am 59 and have been retired for about nine years. Can I take a job at a state prison working part time in the mail room without jeopardizing my disability retirement?
Q. I am a FERS employee being considered for the 60/40 disability retirement. When calculating the amount the person receives based on the high-3 average, is locality pay included? Also, if locality pay is included, is the disability payment adjusted if the person moves to a different locality?
