Q. I am thinking about canceling my health insurance to go under my spouse’s plan. He is not an employee of the government. I have been with the government for 25 years. I know you must carry the insurance for five years in a row to carry it into retirement. I am not in that window. If I cancel it, can I re-enroll later if I decide to get back on (for example, in open season 2015)?

Q. I have been a civilian employee for 12 years and plan to retire at the end of January. I am a retired Navy officer who has been covered under Tricare/CHAMPUS family plans since 1979. Will my five years under a federal government medical care program be covered by my 30+ years of continuous Tricare coverage? I plan to enroll in the Federal Employees Health Benefits plan during the open season and want to be able to carry FEHB into retirement.

Q. I plan to retire in June 2014 (at age 65), and I have been with a Federal Employees Health Benefits plan (self-only) during my entire working CSRS career (39 years). For the past 10 years, I have only used my wife’s health insurance plan from her private employer as she has self-and-family coverage. She is eight years younger (age 57) than I am but she thinks that her job may be eliminated (laid off) and she will need health insurance under my FEHB plan (I would need to change my FEHB plan to self and family). If she were…

Q. I’ve read on your site that during any open season, after I’ve retired, I can change my enrollment option in the Federal Employees Health Benefits. I just want to confirm that such is the case and still have Uncle Sam pick up the increased premium cost share. Will I be able to change my enrollment in FEHB from self to self and family after I’ve retired (in open season) and still have the government share of the self-and-family premium picked up by Uncle Sam? I’d plan to revert back to self-only later, once my spouse starts receiving her pension…

Q. We are approaching open season for the different plans. I turned 65 in May and opted in for Medicare parts A and B. I have the Standard Blue Cross option. Will the Basic option cover my needs as well as having Standard? I know several people in my area who have gone to the Basic and I’m considering but wanted to dig a little deeper into the issue.

Q. We are trying to determine whether or not my husband, a federal employee, must have self-and-family coverage on the date he retires to have a spouse covered under his health/dental/vision plans. I am not under his health insurance as I am covered by my employer. I will stop working after he retires. If he retires in a self-only status for health/dental/vision, will he be able to add me and change to self and family after he retires? Either at open enrollment or when I stop working and lose my employment coverage? If so, can you tell us where to…

Q. I am a retired CSRS federal employee and have Blue Cross/Blue Shield as primary coverage for myself and my husband. He is retired military and has Tricare Prime for himself and me as secondary coverage. Under Obama’s new health coverage plan, will we be able to continue our coverage as is? Have the BC/BS 2014 premiums been determined/published?  Will I receive notification from the government, as in past years, that it is open season and, if I do not want to change, or am not forced to do so, will I do nothing? Are we required to register/enroll in Obama’s health care coverage since…
