Q. I retired with a disability CSRS retirement at age 52 with 33.3 years of service. I was on workers’ compensation for a bit, switched to a disability retirement and went back to school and started a new career. At age 56, I became earnings restored and was sent paperwork to apply for an immediate retirement. I did and my gross monthly annuity was reduced by $150 per month. The only answer I can get from the Office of Personnel Management is that they are calculated differently. Am I being penalized for retiring early on disability? Should it be calculated…

Q. I retired June 30 with 45 years and six months of creditable service that included four years of military time (which was not repaid). I receive service-connected disability pay that was incurred during wartime on active duty. On my Form 2801, Schedule A, military retired pay (Schedule B), I checked no to waive my retirement benefits to receive credit for military service. Will I receive all of the excess contributions I made to CSRS from when I surpassed the maximum of 41 years and 11 months to when I retired June 30, which is a total of three years…

Q. I am a FERS employee who is 57 years old with not quite 25 years of service. I am being offered a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority along with Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay ($25,000). Would I be eligible for the special retirement supplement if I accept the VSIP? Would I be eligible if I don’t accept it? Is it true that, if I accept the VSIP, I can never apply for disability? That’s what I was told by my HR office. I am being given a very short (30-day) window in which to make all of these decisions.

Q. If I were approved for FERS disability, is there a recertifying process that I would have to undergo each year? I am 52 years old. Would my annuity begin at 56, or would it be 62? My minimum retirement age is 56. If there is an annual check to see if you are still disabled and you are deemed now fit by the Office of Personnel Management or the federal government, would they find you another job?

Q. My husband is filing for federal medical retirement and his agency may be letting him go during this process. He currently has a family plan that includes me and the kids for his health insurance. When they let him go, we may not be able to afford to keep the entire family on his health plan under COBRA. If he drops the kids and me during the COBRA period, will it affect what insurance plan he will receive once his federal medical retirement is approved?
