Q. I was allowed to go back into CSRS after an 18-year break in service even though I cashed out of it in 1991, with eight years of service. I can pay the redeposit back and have 12 years of service, if that is the wise thing, but I am waiting to see if I get a permanent job when this temporary job expires in 2014. Since I am only 54, I am beginning to wonder if I should have gone back into CSRS, because if I can’t find another federal job, and it is looking difficult with the budget…
Q. If I am offered Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay, I accept it and it is approved, but I find a job in the federal government before my retirement date in July, can I rescind my retirement and accept a job since nothing had been paid yet?
Q. I just retired Dec. 31 with 23 years at age 61 and was a FERS employee. My account was just finalized and on May 1, I will draw my first computed payment. Can I go back to work for the federal government and apply for positions? If so what is my category I fall under — reinstatement eligible, current federal employee, etc.?
Q. Are there new rules as to how long a civil service employee can be retired and return to work as a federal employee? I was always told five years. Also, do CSRS employees have to work 42 years to get 80 percent of their salary?
Q. I am a federal firefighter under FERS. I have 25 years in position and will reach mandatory retirement age in 4.5 years. I want to stay with the federal program where I work. Is it legal for me to retire from the fire service and move to another government position here at the base where I am employed? If so, where is this in print, or under what regulation? I know in years past this was not allowed unless you came back as a contract employee.
Q. I am an 1811 criminal investigator with 21 years of covered law enforcement service. I am 48. Have I locked in my law enforcement retirement such that I can pursue another noncovered federal job while maintaining the option to retire when I turn 50?
Q. I am 51 and retired with 22 years with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In our agency, we could retire at age 50 with 20 years of service or at any age with 25 years of service. Our maximum retirement age is 57. I thought I understood from retirement training that in our special circumstances, earnings rules did not apply until we reached age 57, or when we would have been forced to retire. In other words, after early but full eligibility retirement, we could work and we would not be penalized or limited with new income, in that…
Q. I retired as a GS-14, CSRS employee, at 30 years. If I take a GS-15 position, does the retirement stop, or is the pay just offset by the amount of the annuity? Do you pay into the CSRS retirement fund or FERS, or can one defer? Does health insurance continue from the retirement or from the new payroll?
Q. As a FERS rehire, I know that I will get my previous sick leave reinstated, but at what rate? The new rate or at the rate at which I earned it?
