Q. I’m thinking of making the leap to the private sector but have just nine years of service under FERS. Must you have 10 years of service to collect a deferred annuity? I’m under 40 years old and am a GS-14.

In my last two columns, I described the procedures agencies are required to use when they conduct a reduction in force. In this column, I’ll focus on the options available to employees who are eligible to retire when facing a RIF. Immediate retirement If you have the right combination of age and service, you’ll be able to retire on an immediate annuity, even if you aren’t directly targeted by a RIF. Here are the rules, which are different for personnel under the Civil Service Retirement System and the Federal Employees Retirement System. The immediate retirement rules are different for special…
Q. I am a FERS-covered employee. I will have 20 years of creditable service at my minimum retirement age of 56. Can I take a deferred annuity at age 60 without any reduction? Or do I have to take it at age 62 since I’m considering the MRA+10 retirement option?
Q. I’m 49 years old and I have 18 years in with the post office. I’m under FERS. I want to get in my 20 years and then I want to leave the post office and open up a catering business. When I leave the post office, will I be able to draw on my 20 years at retirement age of 62 or will I lose the time I have in and end up with nothing for leaving early? If I get anything, how will I know how much I can expect to get?
Q. I’m 48 years old with 25 years of service under FERS. I’m thinking of taking a position with a state agency within the next two years. When can I collect my federal retirement if I leave federal service? Also, what would happen with my sick leave and annual leave balance?
Q. I am 53 years old and will have 30 years of service with the Postal Service under CSRS. If I leave the post office before I am 55 years old, will my annuity start when I turn 55?
Q. I am 43 years old. I have worked for the federal government for 13 years and was approved for disability retirement. If I take federal disability retirement for only one year and stop, how does that affect future retirement options/annuity payments from the federal government?
Q. I am 42 and have 11 years of covered law enforcement time. Can I leave for a state position and collect half at age 45? This is what I was told.
Q. I left federal government with 17.5 years in service under FERS in 2005. I had approximately 1,000 hours of sick leave when I left service. I turned 56 in August and am considering applying for a deferred annuity. Am I eligible to receive any of my sick leave as credit to my years in service?
Q. I am 45 years old with 15 years of FERS. My job is being moved 85 miles away and I am trying to determine the benefit (if any) to my FERS pension (beyond the addition of five years to the total) of continuing on five more years until I have 20 years and am 50 years old. Resign now with 15 years at 45 years old vs. tough out the drive for five more years and resign at 20 years at 50 years old? What advantage is there to this (if any) on my FERS pension?
