Q. For the past 20+ years, I have held term appointments with several federal government commissions and boards in the D.C. area. Naturally, I have experienced several breaks in my service. Will the gaps in my employment make me ineligible for federal employee health benefits upon retirement? And, if I am considered ineligible, is there a possibility that a waiver can be obtained through the Office of Personnel Management? I was told I need to carry health insurance at least five years prior to retirement, but have not received an official answer from my human resources office about my personal…

Q. Last week, I told Joplin Social Security that I was going to retire Nov.30, but my work has asked me to work half days for a few months. Will this affect my first Social Security check in January? How much can I make without paying a penalty? Do I have to tell the Joplin office that I am going to work 20 hours after I told them I was going to retire Nov. 30?
Q. I will be eligible to draw my CSRS retirement on Jan. 18. I work at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Asheville, N.C. I will be 62 years of age on Jan. 18 and also eligible to draw Social Security. Can I draw my CSRS retirement but leave my Social Security at this time, and still continue to work at VA and draw full pay?
Q. I am presently active-duty Army. I enlisted in 1981. I had a break in service. I worked in the Postal Service for 10 years. I have a total of 19 active-duty years. How does that work as far as retiring from the Army? Can I retire from the Army now? If I do 20 years on active duty and retire from the Army, can I get credit for 30 years federal retirement time?

Q. If I retire from the Postal Service at age 56, can I work a part-time job after I retire, or would I lose my benefits? The part-time job would not be for the federal government.
Q. I am a rehired annuitant who is approaching completion of his second year in that position with the same federal agency. Is there a prohibition of completing three years as a rehired annuitant with the same agency as long as you do not exceed 3,120 hours?
Q. I served 27 years federal service, then had a break in service of two years and one month and was reinstated to the status I had before (GS-7, Step 8. My personnel lady told me the time I served as a Step 8 before would count toward my next step increase. I was a Step 8 for one year, five months and two weeks, so do I only have to wait one year, six months and two weeks for my next step increase, or do I have to wait the full three years?
Q. I have prior CSRS service with a break in employment. I am now CSRS Offset. I did not get health insurance when I returned to service because I was covered by the Veterans Affairs Department. I picked it up during open season the following year. I can retire in two years at age 62. I will need one more year to have my five years to carry my health insurance into retirement for my disabled husband. The trouble is, I have terminal cancer. My life expectancy is two years. I hope to make it to retirement but worry beyond…
