Q. I am a Department of Army term employee overseas and was recently informed by human resources that the Army will not renew (extend) my term appointment once I complete 24 months in January 2014. I have 25 years (18 military, seven FERS) of combined service for retirement purposes from civil service. If I can’t continue federal employment by the time I complete my current 24-month term assignment, what status should I choose if I intend to return to federal employment in the near future? In other words, if I must have a break in service, I want to ensure…

Q. I am 57 years old and work for the Defense Department. At age 60, I will have 26 years under FERS. I would like to retire at age 60 and draw my federal pension. Would I be able to work for another nonfederal government agency (say state, county or city) without affecting my federal pension?

Q. My husband resigned from federal service eight months shy of fulfilling five years of service. If he returns to the federal government and has left his retirement in place, I know that he will begin accruing time toward his five years vestment. However, do his years of service also accrue from where his time left off – four years and four months?

Q. I am a FERS employee considering retirement after 22 years of military service and 24 years of federal civilian employment. I will be 65 or older at the time of retirement. Are there any rules limiting for whom you may choose to work after retirement? Specifically, are you disallowed from working for the government of another country directly as an employee or in a contract relationship?

Q. I retired from the federal civil service in November 2012 with 35½ years of service at age 56. I would like to go back to work under federal civil service. Can I be re-employed by the federal civil service? And can it be the same work grade series, or would I have to change work grade series? I was an aircraft mechanic (WG-8852-10) series. Is there a time limit in which I can re-apply for a federal job? Management told me they would rehire me as long as I applied through USAJobs. Could you explain how this would work…

Q. I’ve been with the federal government for less than two years. I’m soon to separate from service to pursue other opportunities. If I don’t use my accrued sick leave, do I lose it or am I compensated for that time in my last check?

Q. I currently draw a 25 percent annuity from my late husband’s disability retirement from the Postal Service. I also worked for the Postal Service and am a military veteran. I bought back my military time, which gave me a total of 20 years and seven months postal time. I had to resign from my career position in 2004 to take care of my late husband because he suffered a severe stroke that required 24-hour care. I did not have the heart to put him in a nursing home. He passed away in 2006 and I have since been trying to be reinstated with…

Q. I started working for the federal government in September 2008 and separated in June. If I get rehired into the federal government this month, do I go back to career status and earn six hours of leave since I worked over three years without a break in service? Also, would I be subject to a probationary period again?
