Q. I began 6(c) coverage on Sept. 26, 1999; I was deployed by the Army Reserve for 18 months from May 2005 to September 2006. I am 48 years old. Do I have to do an extra 18 months to retire with 20 years of 6(c) coverage? I bought back the 18 months already and I began my scheduled leave on April 19, 1993, which already had been paid back.

Q. I am retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service. I have been in FERS since 2005. In my office of five individuals, I was the last hired. I am thinking about buying my military service back. If I did this, would my service computation date change after I paid my deposit or would my SCD only change if I waived my retirement pay? Would buying back my time put me into a higher position with my peers if a reduction in force were to happen?

Q. I was forced to retire from the Air Force at 18 years and one month in 2007 and I began working civil service one month later. I receive full retirement benefits, but I do not receive my retirement pay because my disability is higher, so I only receive the disability pay. Can I buy my 18 years and one month back and put it toward my civil servant retirement? Will this affect my retiree benefits from the Air Force?

Q. We are a gay couple of 18 years trying to decide if it makes practical sense to get married: Partner 1: CSRS, will max out with 40 years of federal service in two years. Partner 2: eight years of federal service under FERS; military reservist recalled to active duty in 2001, still on active duty. In two years, will be eligible for military pension (total reserve and active time will equal about 3/4 of an active-duty O-5 pension); will then return to federal service, put a military deposit on active-duty time and work four years to a minimum retirement…

Q. I am a dual status military technician in the National Guard. In March, I was deemed medically unable to maintain membership in the Guard, and retired militarily. Because I was disqualified from service, I submitted my packet to the Office of Personnel Management requesting disability retirement. I was denied, of course, because my condition was not workers’ compensation-related. On June 26, I received that notification and was informed that my packet was now under review for a “special provisions” disability retirement.  That letter also stated it would take two to six months before a decision was made. Six days…
