Yearly Archives: 2013

Q. I am a federal employee under CSRS. My service computation date is May 1, 1976. I have six years of active-duty service and do not qualify for Social Security, nor will I qualify when I plan to retire at age 62. I know at that time, since I don’t qualify for Social Security, no deposit is required to get credit for my military service and that my federal CSRS annuity will not be reduced. Assume I retire at age 62 as described above not qualifying for Social Security. But, say, at age 63, I get a private-sector job after…

Q. I retired from the Veterans Affairs Department in 2001 after 23 years of service. I joined as a rehired annuitant in 2006. My annuity was deducted from my salary. I am thinking of retiring again in 2014. I will have eight years of additional service. I know I can request a recomputation of my total annuity. Can I keep my original annuity and opt for supplemental annuity for the eight years of additional service?

Q. I have some questions regarding retirement under FERS: 1. They used to allow lump-sum withdrawal of your own contributions to your retirement so you could transfer to your own IRA. Is that still an option, or has that since been rescinded? 2. My wife and I are contemplating not taking survivor benefits because she will get my Thrift Savings Plan and Social Security payments. Also, I have provided enough life insurance to cover her income. The question was raised that she would then not be eligible for my Federal Employees Health Benefits for medical if I was deceased. What…

Q. I plan on separating from the government Jan. 10, 2015, at 56 years, six months and nine days old and postpone getting my annuity until June or July 2018, when I will be 60 years old. My service computation date is May 6, 1990. To accomplish this, my understanding was to submit an SF-52 with Section E filled out to resign and then, approximately 90 days before I wanted my annuity to start, submit a RI92-19 to apply. But I keep reading where I can retire under MRA+10 on a regular retirement form, and there is a way to…

Q. I am in CSRS Offset and I will be eligible to retire with an annuity and possible early buyout at age 50. I received my benefit estimate report, which has a monthly Social Security offset amount. Is this amount what I will get in addition to my annuity when I am 62? I also see that if an employee decides to delay receiving Social Security benefits until after he or she turns 62, the CSRS benefit would be reduced even though the employee might not be receiving the Social Security benefit? Is that correct?

Q. I voluntarily left my GS job to take an Army Guard and Reserve position for the past 12 years. I have since retired as a reservist and applied for several federal positions. Prior to going AGR, I had obtained GS-13 Step 5 but took a staff position for the past couple of years as GS-12 step 10 (the pay was relatively the same, and I knew the experience would be beneficial for the AGR position I sought). After looking through your FAQs, it seems the hiring authority may have some leeway to reinstate me to a higher step level.…
