Q. My husband retired from the federal government a year and a half ago with 40 years of service. I am age 59 and employed by the commonwealth of Virginia. If I take early retirement through Virginia Retirement Service, can I draw on his retirement since I am not 62 and cannot draw Social Security?
Yearly Archives: 2013
Q. I am 53 on disability retirement under CSRS. I have 29 years and six months. When I turn 55, can I convert to regular retirement? Also if the Postal Service offers an early-out, am I eligible?
Q. I retired under CSRS after 26 years of service. I worked for six years before my federal service and have been working and paying Social Security for the past nine years. If I put in 20 years under Social Security, will I still be affected by the windfall elimination provision?
Q. I transferred from CSRS to FERS in 1999. I was employed by the Department of the Interior from 1981 to 1987 and then the Justice Department since 1987. During my DOI time, I had temporary employment from 1981 to 1983, at which time I didn’t pay retirement. I still need to buy back my time for that credit. Will the time be credited as CSRS or FERS time?
Q. I am age 47 with 28 years under FERS. Is it true that if you take a job with a lower grade (pay cut) and retire in less than three years (i.e. Voluntary Early Retirement Authority or normal retirement), it would not affect my high-3 calculation?
Q. I am a 12-year (1987-1999) Air Force veteran who got medically retired with full benefits. I have been with the federal government since 2006 in FERS. If I bought my military time back, how would that affect my medical, ID card, and all the perks of being military retired?
Q. My grandfather worked as a postmaster in Boyle Heights, Calif., for more than 30 years. He remarried my grandmother after he retired. They were married in 1977, and he passed away in 2003. Is my grandmother able to get part of his retirement pension?
Q. I am a FERS employee who will have 30 years of permanent GS employment in December 2015. I have six months of temporary time as a GS employee, which would move my 30 years to April 2015. Can I buy back the temporary time? If so, how do I start this process?
Q. I have just been approved for Social Security disability. I also applied for FERS in March I was terminated for not following leave regulations because I couldn’t go to work. Should my FERS case go through because I was approved for SSDI, or will it still be a complicated procedure? It seems, if Social Security decided that I can’t work, I obviously can’t do the work I was doing at the Defense Finance and Accounting Services.
Q. If I retire with 28 years of service at age 53, would I be eligible for the special retirement supplement. Where would I find info?
