Q. I’m a full-time regular employee for the Postal Service. I work at a facility that is scheduled to close soon, resulting in the loss of my position. For the past several years, I also have been working part time for the Veterans Affairs health care system. If I transfer to a full-time position at VA, will my FERS contributions, annual and sick leave transfer, too? I’m 52 years old with 32 years of federal service. My minimum retirement age is 56 years.

Q. My husband will retire next year under FERS and he is interested in working seasonally for the National Park Service. I realize his salary would likely be offset by the amount of his annuity. Is there any problem with doing this year after year? (e.g., work seasonally for four to six months, then be unemployed the rest of the year). Would it affect our federal benefits carried into retirement (e.g., FEHB, life insurance)?

Q. I am retired under CSRS, then took a part-time job in the private sector to get my 40 credits to collect at least something from Social Security. I have recently started collecting my windfall elimination provision-reduced Social Security benefit. I am continuing to work this job. I see upon logging on to My Social Security, that my 2012 income has been posted but my monthly payment has not increased. Do my earnings increase my Social Security payments? When does that happen?

Q. I plan to work until my minimum retirement age, which is in eight years. I work part time (80 percent of the time) and will have worked for the government for 35 years (1986-2021). But my total service computation years will only be 27 when I reach my MRA. Will I be eligible for the MRA plus 30 because I worked for 35 years or only the MRA plus 10 (with the significant penalty) because I worked 27 years based on the service computation?

Q. I am 52 and would like to retire at 55. At that point, I will have 35 years in CSRS. I also have 36 quarters in Social Security as I worked a part-time job in college and other points in my life. Will I receive Social Security benefits with less than 40 quarters, and if so at what level? Also, if I go back to work as a contractor after I retire from federal service and get my additional quarters, what would be the impact when the windfall elimination provision kicks in?

Q. I am retiring in January with 36 years in. The last 6 were part time (20 hours per week). Looks like they are using my high-3 from the last three (part-time) years. After 36 years in CSRS, I’m getting basically 50 percent or less! You mentioned some court case where CSRS was found unlawful and they are using FERS calculations. Could you give me specifics so I can look up that case?

Q. I retired in December 2010 after 35 years of federal service. I recently accepted a part-time position working 32.5 hours a week at my local post office. Nobody at the Office of Personnel Management nor the Postal Service can advise me on how this will affect my pension. I earn $90,000 in annuity, and the job I accepted pays $22,000 per year.

Q. I am a part-time employee (20 hours per week) and have been for 17 years. But I worked full time previously for seven years. If I retire at age 62 with 30 or so years and go full time my last three years at GS-12, will I get the high-3 even with part-time previously worked?

Q. I am a FERS employee in the Justice Department with 25 years of government service as of February. I will be 60 in two years. For six months in 2012, I worked a 28-hour part-time schedule. Will this have any effect on my special retirement supplement if I leave the government before my full eligibility date in 2015 and postpone my pension until I turn 60? Also, will accepting a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority, should one be offered, before I reach age 60 affect the SRS with respect to that part-time period?
