Q. I have completed 24 years of federal service with a law enforcement provision (Bureau of Prisons), and two years of federal service prior to that with no special provision. Six months ago, I left the BOP and transferred to another agency, non-law enforcement. I believe that my annuity (FERS) will be calculated at 20 years law enforcement, the four years remaining BOP time as regular, and another two years whatever else I work in the new agency as regular. Since I am no longer in a law enforcement capacity, will my status change for the special retirement supplement? I’m…

Q. I was in the Army for eight years. After I got out, I spent 15 years in the National Guard. I got a job with the Postal Service. Now that I am 60, I applied for retirement with the Guard and they used the eight years for my retirement. I bought the eight years back when I joined the Postal Service. Can I use the eight years for the Postal Service retirement also?

Q. I am considering applying for a FERS disability retirement. I understand the percentages of pay and applying for Social Security disability if Social Security approves disability also. If you file for FERS disability retirement, you must at the same time file for Social Security disability benefits. If you do not, the Office of Personnel Management will not process your application. Based on this statement, is it true that OPM could approve, however Social Security may not approve, as they have different standards? What happens if Social Security does not approve. Will I continue to get the unreduced monthly annuity…

Q. I am an attorney for the government under FERS. I plan to retire in 2014 with 30 years of service at age 58. My high-3 is $150,000 a year. When I ran the numbers through the FERS calculator, it stated that my special retirement supplement would only be $108 a month. My only income will be my FERS annuity, and I plan to buy the Thrift Savings Plan annuity. Is this correct? I thought my SRS would be around $1,200 a month. My Social Security Administration statement states that age 62, my Social Security benefit will be approximately $1,800…

Q. How do I calculate my retirement eligibility date? I have two periods of service under FERS: July 19, 2010, through Oct. 27, 2010, and Oct. 12, 2010, through the present? I’m confused by the definition of a month. Is my first period of service two months (the calendar months of August and September), three months (July 19 through Oct. 18 after eliminating the partial month from Oct. 19 through Oct. 27), or three months and 11 days?

Q. My agency has offered me a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay for at least the last five years. I have 10½ years active duty Army. I have 27 years as a government employee. I turn 55 in December. I am under FERS. My agency will offer me VERA/VSIP at the end of this year. I have not bought my military time yet, but I will do so. Will I be eligible for Social Security supplement or FERS annuity supplement? Is there a difference?

Q. I am a letter carrier covered by FERS and I have 26 years in. I am 49 years old and my minimum retirement age is 56 years and six months. I would like to leave the post office, get a job with the Veterans Affairs Department and work there until my MRA. Would I get the same retirement at VA as I would get with USPS if I stayed there until my MRA?

Q. I am 45 years old with 15 years of FERS. My job is being moved 85 miles away and I am trying to determine the benefit (if any) to my FERS pension (beyond the addition of five years to the total) of continuing on five more years until I have 20 years and am 50 years old. Resign now with 15 years at 45 years old vs. tough out the drive for five more years and resign at 20 years at 50 years old? What advantage is there to this (if any) on my FERS pension?
