Q. I am a FERS employee considering retirement after 22 years of military service and 24 years of federal civilian employment. I will be 65 or older at the time of retirement. Are there any rules limiting for whom you may choose to work after retirement? Specifically, are you disallowed from working for the government of another country directly as an employee or in a contract relationship?

Q. I retired from the federal civil service in November 2012 with 35½ years of service at age 56. I would like to go back to work under federal civil service. Can I be re-employed by the federal civil service? And can it be the same work grade series, or would I have to change work grade series? I was an aircraft mechanic (WG-8852-10) series. Is there a time limit in which I can re-apply for a federal job? Management told me they would rehire me as long as I applied through USAJobs. Could you explain how this would work…
Q. I’m a 57-year-old FERS employee with 21 years of service. My human resources benefits adviser said I will be eligible to retire on unreduced immediate annuity at 60 years old with 24 years of service. Would I be eligible for the special retirement supplement when I retire at 60 years old? The HR benefits adviser also said I can retire now on MRA+10 provisions, but my annuity will be reduced by 5 percent for every year I’m under 62. If I retire now, since I’m over 55 years old, would I be able to withdraw my Thrift Savings Plan…
Q. I retired in June 2011 at age 56 with 32 years at the Postal Service under CSRS. When I turn 62, will I be able to apply for Social Security benefits without reducing CSRS benefits? I have enough quarters to draw a small amount from Social Security.
Q. I am a 62-year-old CSRS Offset retiree receiving Social Security survivor benefits. I have been informed that my annuity will be reduced by $773 per month since I am now eligible for Social Security benefits. When I applied for Social Security benefits on my own earnings, I was told that I could not receive both my benefit and the survivor benefit I was already receiving. It was my understanding that I would receive a reduced Social Security benefit equal to the amount of the offset to my annuity and that I was also entitled to keep my Social Security…
Q. If a FERS employee has retired and started receiving their pension, are they permitted to apply for another GS job later on, if they so choose? If they get a GS job after having been retired, what happens to their annuity?
Q. I have retired after 42 years of federal service. I was on CSRS with no offset. How does Social Security affect my benefits? Before starting my career with the federal government, I had amassed enough quarterly hours to qualify for a small Social Security benefit. Am I still entitled? Will my CSRS be subjected to offset? Or does Social Security really not affect my CSRS benefit but because I received much more than I would as a recipient receiving SSI benefits, SSI really doesn’t exist as far as I am concerned?
Q. I’m a FERS employee with 19 years of civil service who is turning 56 in November. If my organization offers a buyout, would there be any type of penalty for retiring earlier than Nov. 27, 2017 (my full retirement date, without penalty)? Would I be eligible for the special retirement supplement?
Q. Can a CSRS retiree collect half of a spousal benefit under Social Security to get a higher benefit than he would receive under the windfall elimination provision? My Social Security check was reduced nearly 50 percent. If I could collect half of my wife’s benefit, I would come out a few hundred dollars ahead every month.
Q. A FERS employee is 52 years old with 27 years of service and would like to retire immediately. 1. When can I receive my annuity? 2. What is the penalty?
