Q. I am 50 years old with 20 years of service from the military (retired). I have 10 years federal service. Do I qualify for Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay? If not, OPM Form 1496A is the application For Voluntary Early Retirement. Do I submit Form 1496A prior to terminating my employment or wait until I reach the minimum retirement age?

Q. I am 59 with 29 years of service under FERS.  I have a service computation date of Dec. 17, 1983, due to other part-time work with the government. I started with the government in May 1984 on this job. Am I allowed to buy back and make deposits toward this time? Is there any way I can change over to CSRS? I don’t remember begin given a choice.

Q. I recently returned to the federal government, and have 21 months in my current return. My total federal service will be 22 years in October. I had an on-the-job injury while with the Postal Service, and this injury has gotten worse since a car accident and surgery (I work for the Department of Veterans Affairs). I do not know how much longer I can work (pain, medication, etc). Am I qualified for disability retirement with medical benefits, even though my current return to federal service is less than five years?

Q. How do I calculate my retirement eligibility date? I have two periods of service under FERS: July 19, 2010, through Oct. 27, 2010, and Oct. 12, 2010, through the present? I’m confused by the definition of a month. Is my first period of service two months (the calendar months of August and September), three months (July 19 through Oct. 18 after eliminating the partial month from Oct. 19 through Oct. 27), or three months and 11 days?

Q. I work for Congress and have just over 26 years of federal service under FERS. I will be turning 51 years old at the end of this year. Can I retire early and defer my FERS retirement without penalty and work another job as a contractor until I reach age 62, then completely retire and start receiving my benefits? Also, will I be eligible to continue to receive my Federal Employees Health Benefits if I retire at the end of this year?

Q. I started working for the government on May 5, 1986. I am covered under FERS and would like to know if I would be eligible for the special retirement supplement if I plan to retire in August 2014. I will have turned 59 years old on July 24, 2014, and will have worked 28 years. If not, when would be the earliest date I would be eligible to receive the SRS prior to Social Security benefits at age 62?
