Q. I withdrew my CSRS for a bit of service with the Postal Service in 1990. I then was rehired by the Postal Service and have just retired. I redeposited $2,818 to make my annuity about $100 more per month. That withdrawal didn’t affect my years of service, just the annuity amount. Can I deduct that redeposit somehow from my federal tax return for this year?

Q. What are the “rare exceptions” to having your salary reduced by your annuity amount when re-entering the federal job market? What if the job pays less than my annuity? I see the following over and over in the forums, but no additional info: “As a rule, your salary would be offset by the amount of your annuity and you would be able to contribute to the retirement fund. If you worked for a full year, you’d receive a supplemental annuity; if you worked for five years, you’d receive a redetermined annuity. On the other hand, there are certain limited…

Q. I worked for the federal government as a temporary employee twice: August-November, 1972 as a clerk-typist in a 90-day position. I believe I was not in the FERS plan but rather paid into Social Security. The second time was the following year:  February-March, 1973.  I am pretty certain that this was also a temporary position of six months, which I left after two months. If I am correct, and it was a temporary position, I probably was exempt from FERS and again paid into Social Security. I am now trying to add up my Social Security credits. I think…

Q. I am 57 years of age and served 25 years as a FERS law enforcement officer. Two years ago, I transferred from that position to another agency (unbroken service) and serve in a non-LEO FERS position. I continue to contribute 1.3 percent to FERS while my agency contributes its required LEO percentage. The agency suggests I should be paying only 0.8 percent. Upon leaving federal service, how will my retirement be calculated in terms of percentages and high-3 years? Will the calculation change as well as any other factors if I contribute at the lower percentage as the agency…

Q. My father worked for the Postal Service for 42 years and retired in 2005. He passed away from cancer in March 2013. Before his death, he left instructions to contact federal retirement (CSRS) to file a claim to acquire his retirement benefits. He has four grown children, and there are no other beneficiaries. Retirement was contacted and we were mailed four applications for CSRS death benefits (SF 2800), to be filled out by each of us to apply and receive his remaining retirement contribution to be dispersed four ways. All four of us recently received a final statement of…
