Q. I am 57 and was a civilian firefighter for the Navy in FERS with 13 years of service. I was medically retired in 2001 and have been receiving a disability annuity since. I remember being told or having read that when I turn 62, my disability annuity will revert to a standard retirement, reducing my pension. A couple of years after I left the federal system, I found part-time work to help add to my income, staying well under the 80 percent requirement, but over the last two to three years, my medical issues have worsened, and I am…

Q. I’m a FERS employee considering retiring under the MRA+10 provision. I’m 59 with 20 years of service. If I postpone the start of my annuity until I reach 60, I know there won’t be any reduction in my annuity. Will I also be eligible for the special retirement supplement if I postpone my annuity?

Q. I plan to retire at age minimum retirement age of 56, with 34 years of service and received an estimate of FERS annuity plus special retirement supplement. The estimate only shows deductions for federal tax and maximum survivor benefit election from the base FERS annuity but no deductions from the special retirement supplement. Can you verify that the special retirement supplement is not federally taxed?

Q. I worked for the U.S. Postal Service under CSRS for 17 years and resigned in 1988 to work in private industry. I left my contributions in the retirement fund. Several years later, I went to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs as a FERS employee. Can my time with USPS be used toward my retirement with the Department of Veterans Affairs?

Q. I am an active-duty member of the Air Force with five years of service. I am planning to stay in for five more years to transfer my post-9/11 education benefits to my kids. I am looking to get out of active service at the 10-year mark and would like to remain working for the federal government. How would my years of service count toward retirement if I began to work for the Veterans Administration versus switching service branches (i.e. public health services corps)?

Q. The Postal Service in my installation is transferring all mail to another installation more than 50 miles away. This will affect more than 80 percent of the workforce, including myself. I am a clerk, not a carrier. They may offer me a clerk position less than 40 hours, or a carrier position, which is a different craft. I am a career employee. Would it be possible for me to retire with a unreduced annuity and the special retirement supplement? I am in FERS with over 27 years at age 59.

Q. I’ve retired on disability and am 33 years old. I receive a measly $400 per month. I haven’t received my retirement plaque, let alone more pay. I receive $1,300 in Social Security. When I was working, I made over $53,000 per year. Where can I find a retirement lawyer for the federal government and why haven’t they sent me my plaque? I’ve been retired since 2011. I’ve been in appeal process with the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs for my on-the-job injury.

Q. I recently made a lateral move from one federal law enforcement agency to another, after about four years with my former agency. I moved from one FERS-covered position to another. On my leave and earnings statement, my military service credit purchase/payment, which I paid in a lump sum about five years ago, has disappeared, and my cumulative FERS retirement funds reset to zero. I contacted the Office of Personnel Management, which instructed me that my former agency should have forwarded my “account” to OPM for maintenance, and that I would receive a letter stating the account was in maintenance…
