Q. I am a FERS employee with more than 24 years of service (will likely retire at my minimum retirement age in 10 years). I served four years of active-duty military, then transferred to the Guard, where I still serve (more than 26 years of total service). I bought back my active military service time to increase my length of service under FERS (and ultimately increase my FERS annuity). Since my active military service will be used in my FERS retirement calculation, can it also be used in my Guard retirement computation (it would greatly increase my number of retirement…

Q. I was in the Army for eight years. After I got out, I spent 15 years in the National Guard. I got a job with the Postal Service. Now that I am 60, I applied for retirement with the Guard and they used the eight years for my retirement. I bought the eight years back when I joined the Postal Service. Can I use the eight years for the Postal Service retirement also?

Q. I am retired military receiving a military pension. I am now in a federal government job under FERS. In September 2015, I will have five years of creditable service and will be 61 years old.  My birthday is in November. I believe I am beyond my minimum retirement age. I would like expert confirmation on what I think to be true. If I submit for deferred retirement once I have the five years of service (September 2015), I should receive an annuity beginning on Dec. 1, 2015 (just after my 62nd birthday in November 2015), and my military pension…

Q. I’m a retired military officer (O-5) and now a civilian working in the Defense Department. Years ago, if you were above an O-4 and came back to civil service, they reduced your retired pay. DoD stopped that, but I’ve heard other agencies in the federal government may still do that. If that’s, true which agencies? I ask because I am interested in a job in Department of Indian Affairs, but I don’t want to lose 50 percent of my military retired pay.

Q. I am a CSRS employee who has been working for 33 years plus four years of military credit gives me 37 years of service. I also have more than 40 credits to qualify for Social Security. I will be 62 this month. What is my classification in terms of government pension offset, windfall, etc.? I know that since I will receive a government pension, my Social Security will be reduced, but by how much and how can I figure it out? I plan on retiring ay the end of this year or next year.

Q. I am a Department of Army term employee overseas and was recently informed by human resources that the Army will not renew (extend) my term appointment once I complete 24 months in January 2014. I have 25 years (18 military, seven FERS) of combined service for retirement purposes from civil service. If I can’t continue federal employment by the time I complete my current 24-month term assignment, what status should I choose if I intend to return to federal employment in the near future? In other words, if I must have a break in service, I want to ensure…

Q. My agency has offered me a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay for at least the last five years. I have 10½ years active duty Army. I have 27 years as a government employee. I turn 55 in December. I am under FERS. My agency will offer me VERA/VSIP at the end of this year. I have not bought my military time yet, but I will do so. Will I be eligible for Social Security supplement or FERS annuity supplement? Is there a difference?

Q. I began my federal civil service just over a year ago and plan to buy back four years of military service. However, with the current budget issues, I am concerned that I will get reduced in force before I am able to complete the five years of service to draw a pension. If that were to happen, would I be entitled to a refund of my deposit, or would I forfeit it?
