Q. I am 55 and worked 19 years with the Postal Service under FERS (from age 26 through 46). I have worked other jobs in the past and up through a few weeks ago. Can I start drawing my pension from the Postal Service? I realize it would be at a lower rate than if I waited until I was older.

Q. I am a federal firefighter under FERS. When I reach age 57, I will have 20 years of service. 1. Can I resign from the Forest Service without drawing my retirement? 2. Can I then collect my firefighter retirement at age 62 or later? 3. Can I resign from the Forest Service and move to another government position?

Q. I have been on disability retirement from the Postal Service since October 1988. I am 56 years old (57 in March) and would like to inquire as to my options to retire under MRA. Also, can I receive a ballpark estimate of how much I would get (monthly/yearly) and all other pertinent information? I believe that I read on the Office of Personnel Management’s Web page that it would be 1 percent of my high-3 income while at the post office, but I am not sure how to do this calculation. If this is an option for me to…

Q. I retired from the Navy in 2006 after 20 years of military service. I am employed as a civilian mariner in Military Sealift Command as a GS-11. After I reach age 56, can I retire and get my retirement from the federal government and still received my military retirement? I was born in 1965 and will have 13 years of service when I reach age 56.

Q. I was considering an early-out, but I’m really close to my minimum retirement age, and full retirement for me will be in 2016. Of course, there would be a reduction/penalties if I retire before 2016, but would it be possible for a person to pay the penalties upfront? I assume if I paid this penalty I would get the amount I would receive as if I had worked until 2016.

Q. I am a federal law enforcement officer under FERS. The minimum retirement age in my field is 50 or 25 years at any time. We collect 1.7 percent per year for the first 20 years. At 10 years, we can apply for a deferred annuity at the MRA. I am 34 and considering resigning early to pursue opportunities in the private sector. I will have 10 years in service soon. Is there an advantage to waiting until I have 10 years? Assuming I apply at 50 and have accumulated 10 years of service accruing 1.7 percent per year, what…

Q. I am a 50-year-old dual-status Air National Guard military technician under FERS. If I decline to enter into the Disability Evaluation System solely for a fitness determination, and am involuntarily separated for Physical Disqualification IAW AFI 36-3209, paragraph 3.14 for enlisted personnel, am I entitled to the special retirement supplement immediately if I retire under a discontinued service retirement with 24 years and four months of service, or will it begin at minimum retirement age (56 years for me)? If I enter into the DES and the time it takes to go through gets me over 25 years service…
