Q. I retired a year ago with 28 years of civil service. I took an early-out, so I was 48 years old at retirement.  My minimum retirement age would have been 56. Do I have to wait until I am 56 to receive the special retirement supplement? Is there any Social Security supplement I can receive now?

Q. How will the signed 2014 budget deal affect FERS retirements? I will have 30 years of government service in January 2015 with my minimum retirement age. As recommended, I have had my retirement plans in place for the past 10 years. Rumors are flying that we will no longer be eligible for the special retirement supplement, which has been calculated into my retirement estimates. Being this close to retirement age, there is not enough time to make up these lost monies if they are stopped.

Q. I am a federal firefighter (GS-10-00) with 27 years of service plus four years active-duty military (bought back). I will be 52 years old this year (2014). If I retire, when will the earned income rule begin to apply to me? At age 57 to age 62? Also, 2014 marks the year that FERS employees can begin receiving credit for unused sick leave toward retirement. I have gotten preliminary estimate of retirement but they calculated over 1,000 hours less than what I have. Is the sick leave supposed to be creditable for full 100 percent, or is it less?

 Q. I served 15 years in the Air Force. I started work at the Veterans Affairs Department after that, part time (50 percent) at age 38. I bought back my military time (15 years). When I retire at my minimum retirement age, I will have 34 years, including my military time (19 years FERS part time and 15 yrs active-duty USAF). How will my retirement be calculated?

Q. If my agency offers me a buyout, what does it mean to me? I am 54 years old. I will reach my minimum retirement age on Jan. 19, 2016. I have 23½ years of service under FERS. My agency is going through a big reorganization. Would you explain to me what it means to my retirement if I’m offered either of them?  Will I be able to retire with no penalty?

Q. Reading some of the questions that are being answered, there is some confusion. Some say if you retire at your minimum retirement age, you will not be able to continue health care coverage, but you must wait to retire at 60 to be able to remain in program. Other answers have been you can have your health care coverage renewed when you reach 60 when you apply for your deferred annuity. Can you clear this up? If I retire at my MRA which is 56, will my health care coverage continue?
