Q. I have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance for a total disability since 2008. From 1981 to 1989, I was a CSRS offset employee in the USPS. When I tried to apply for my CSRS pension, I was informed by letter that I had to wait until I reached age 62, which is unlikely, or withdraw the small amount I contributed as a lump sum. Is it not possible to apply for and receive my CSRS pension when completely disabled? I have read CSRS Pamphlet No. 7 and searched the website Q&A, and I am very confused.

Q. I retired from CSRS with 36 years’ service. I have since become a re-employed annuitant and will hit the five-year mark soon. Because of the nature of the position, I did not have to give up my retired pay. When I retire, will I be eligible for a recalculated CSRS pension assuming I elected to make a deposit for the five years as a re-employed annuitant?

Q. I worked as a temp from 1989 to 1994, when I was finally hired permanent, paying into FERS. What measure was passed disallowing me to deposit (make up) my FERS payment after Jan. 1, 1989? I’m losing five years toward my FERS retirement date while others before 1989 are allowed to buy back. It doesn’t seem fair that some can buy back their temp time and other can’t. I suspect during the hiring freeze in those days, there would be too many buying back those years, correct?

Q. Besides form OPM 2809, what supporting papers do I need to re-enroll 31 days before the loss of Federal Employees Health Benefits coverage? My wife will not get her SF-50 to show employment separation and loss of FEHB until after separation April 20. I called and emailed the Office of Personnel Management, but no response.

Q. I was hired as a term employee Dec. 18, 2006, and am now being laid off along with 370 more term employees. I called FERS and they said because of my age, I keep my health insurance and life insurance. The qualifications were five years of service and having FERS, which I do, but I was wondering if that applies to term or temp employees also. I have worked for the Anniston Army Depot, Ala., for six years and three months. The depot is processing us out this week. My birth date is Jan. 5, 1951.

Q: I was employed by the federal government between August 1983 and September 1999. At the time I left civil service, I withdrew contributions of $50,000. I have been offered a position with the federal government again. I am now 64. If I accept the position, will I be eligible for a pension? How many years would I have to work? Am I eligible for redeposit of funds? A: In order to get credit for your prior service, you would have to redeposit that money plus accumulated interest. If you did so, you’d be eligible for an immediate annuity because…

Q: I work on retirement benefits for employees. My question concerns intermittent employment for which the employee paid into FICA and wants the time to be counted toward service history for retirement. This work was performed in the late 1960s and the employee is under CSRS. I read somewhere that non-deduction service under CSRS will count toward retirement, even if the deposit is not paid. My concern is, whether OPM will accept the documentation that I have for proof of the intermittent employment. In order for OPM to accept the intermittent time worked for retirement, will the time accounted for…

Q: I worked for the government for three years a long time ago and returned recently. I will be eligible to retire at 62 in about three years. I plan to work until 67, if possible. When should I pay back the withdrawals I took from my CSRS retirement? Is it better to do it sooner or later, assuming that I have the funds available? A: Making a deposit sooner than later is the better option because interest continues to accumulate on the amount owed.
