Q. I’m planning to retire in October 2019. I will be 58 years old with 30 years of FERS (including 11 years as a law enforcement officer), and eight and a half years of military service (I bought back my time). Will I incur penalties for retiring before 60? Am I eligible for the OPM supplemental Social Security benefit?
Q. I am hoping to leave service at 59 years old with 25 years of service. I was planning to postpone my annuity start date until I was 60. My understanding is if I postpone and do not defer my annuity, I could resume as if I just left service. I would be entitled to health insurance and my supplement until age 62; if I deferred I would be ineligible for either. I believe the words “postpone” and “defer” are not the same, though are similar in meaning. Do I need to meet my minimum retirement age to qualify for a postponed retirement?
Q. I’m 50 years old, under FERS and have 32 years of service. I plan to retire at 56 with 37 years with the U.S. Postal Service. Will I be eligible to receive a supplement from OPM until I reach full retirement age? Is there money through USPS that I would receive?
Q. I am new to the federal government. What is the benefit of my retirement plan (FERS Code KF)?
Q. With the Social Security supplement for FERS employees, I know there is an income limit at which this phases out. Is this income limit based on what you actual earn, or is it taxable income? For example, could I work and earn $20,000 and put that into my 401(k) plan, thus giving me no taxable income for the year, and still get my Social Security supplement up to age 62?
Q. I worked for the Department of Justice from August 1988 until December 1999. I recently applied for a new job within the federal government. If I am hired, will I be credited for the previous years worked?
Q. I would like to buy back my Reserve time to include my two-week annual tour active duty days. I understand that I wouldn’t get credit if I was working for the federal government and they were giving me 15 days of military leave per year to do my annual tour, but at the time I was working for a private company who did not pay me for my Reserve annual tour active duty days. I was not “double dipping” from the federal government. Can I buy that annual tour active duty time, completed while working in the private sector,…
Q. I am currently overseas on an extended family vacation. I’ll be turning 62 years old at the end of this month. I left the federal service as a law enforcement officer in 2012 with 6 ½ years of creditable service. I did not receive a refund of my retirement contributions when I quit from my federal job. Can you give me an approximate annuity based on my service? What do I have to do to apply for it?
Q. I am a 0.40 full-time equivalent FERS employee (part time) for 20 years with an additional five years of repurchased military time for a total of 25 years. How will this affect the formula (0.01 x high three salary x years of service) for annuity pension when i retire?
