Browsing: Coverage after retirement

Q. I am a 45-year-old FERS employee with 10 years of service in the federal government and having Federal Employees Health Benefits from when I started, wanting to retire (at 45). Am I eligible for federal health insurance when I reach my minimum retirement age (58)? Or can I retire at 45 and rejoin the federal service (and take FEHB) at 56 or 57 and retire at 58 to get FEHB?

Q. I am single and I have had health insurance through Kaiser Permanente for more than 10 years. I am thinking of switching to Blue Cross/Blue Shield because it is a lot better than Kaiser. I still have at least 10 more years before I retire. I heard that to have coverage in retirement, I would have to have five years of coverage before I retire. What if something happens to me in less than five years before I switch to BCBS and it forces me to retire? Can I still keep my BCBS?

Q. I am a retired federal employee and will turn 65 in February. My wife, who will not turn 65 until June 2017, is self-employed and we are both enrolled under my federal retirement health insurance family plan. How, if at all, can we keep my wife covered if I am on Medicare beginning in early 2014? I expect that I will want to sign up for Medicare Part A and B (not sure about the rest), but am worried about how we keep my wife insured, too?

Q. I am a Postal Service employee who has been under CSRS since 1980. Am I under Medicare? Do I apply for Medicare at 65? I understand that, at 65, Medicare becomes primary and pays 80 percent, but since I am in the federal health care system, is that actually primary? My confusion is that we pay the same for health care under the federal health care system while working as we do when we are retired, so I am thinking that our health plan remains primary. So do we even need to apply for Medicare? Why would we need…

Q. I want to see if I can suspend my medical insurance (I am retired FERS). I have taken a part-time job that offers medical benefits if I want them. I need to make a decision soon and was told that when I retired, I would be able to suspend my medical if I found work. What is the amount I can earn before I have to pay back to the Social Security (as I am 59), and do I pay back dollar for dollar?

Q. We are trying to determine whether or not my husband, a federal employee, must have self-and-family coverage on the date he retires to have a spouse covered under his health/dental/vision plans. I am not under his health insurance as I am covered by my employer. I will stop working after he retires. If he retires in a self-only status for health/dental/vision, will he be able to add me and change to self and family after he retires? Either at open enrollment or when I stop working and lose my employment coverage? If so, can you tell us where to…

Q. I am a retired CSRS federal employee and have Blue Cross/Blue Shield as primary coverage for myself and my husband. He is retired military and has Tricare Prime for himself and me as secondary coverage. Under Obama’s new health coverage plan, will we be able to continue our coverage as is? Have the BC/BS 2014 premiums been determined/published?  Will I receive notification from the government, as in past years, that it is open season and, if I do not want to change, or am not forced to do so, will I do nothing? Are we required to register/enroll in Obama’s health care coverage since…
