Q. I am under CSRS. My service computation date is Nov. 13, 1983. I have 34 Social Security quarters paid. Can I pay the remaining Social Security quarters in lump sum, or do I have to work to contribute? Will this be to my advantage?

Q. I am under FERS and will not be 62 until March 2016. My office is submitting paperwork to the Office of Personnel Management to extend Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay. I was considering retiring in December 2014, which would incur the early retirement penalty. Although I will have the age, I won’t have the years of service. My position may be identified as one that allows me to leave under VSIP. If so, and I take early retirement under VSIP, will the penalty still apply?
Q. I retired from CSRS but did not buy my military time (six years) due to misinformation/misunderstanding. Now they are taking away what little Social Security I was receiving. If I go back to work, under Social Security payments, will I be able to build that up and then be eligible for Social Security benefits?
Q. I have more than 14 years of civil service. I’m retired military (20 years). I’m almost 58 years old. I fall under FERS. A while back, an email came down asking who would be interested in Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay. I replied in the affirmative. If they offer VERA/VSIP, my supervisor says he would not approve it for me, as he cannot afford to lose the position. My plan was to retire at 60, but if they offered VERA/VSIP I would go earlier. With talk of reductions in force, I’m concerned what course would be most…
Q. My husband is a government worker under FERS. He filed for Social Security disability and received his first check on Sept. 28 for August 2013. He was told that his FERS disability retirement of $3,114 would be reduced by 100 percent because he is receiving SSD. What does that mean? Would his SSD of $2,092 also be reduced? If he is awarded workers’ compensation, can he elect to receive that and stop the FERS disability and the Social Security disability?
Q. I am 50 years old with 20 years of service from the military (retired). I have 10 years federal service. Do I qualify for Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay? If not, OPM Form 1496A is the application For Voluntary Early Retirement. Do I submit Form 1496A prior to terminating my employment or wait until I reach the minimum retirement age?
Q. If I retire at 56½ with 30 years of service and draw $4,000 a month from FERS, will it reduce my special retirement supplement or Social Security payment at age 62? In other words, since it is over the Social Security limit, does it count as income, or is it treated separately?
Q. I am a FERS-covered employee. I will have 20 years of creditable service at my minimum retirement age of 56. Can I take a deferred annuity at age 60 without any reduction? Or do I have to take it at age 62 since I’m considering the MRA+10 retirement option?
Q. I am a CSRS employee who has been working for 33 years plus four years of military credit gives me 37 years of service. I also have more than 40 credits to qualify for Social Security. I will be 62 this month. What is my classification in terms of government pension offset, windfall, etc.? I know that since I will receive a government pension, my Social Security will be reduced, but by how much and how can I figure it out? I plan on retiring ay the end of this year or next year.
Q. Now that I’ve reached age 62, the Office of Personnel Management has informed me that my CSRS Offset goes into effect. Fine. I’ve received a number of written indications of what my pension’s reduced amount will be and that amount received on Sept. 3. Now how and when does the Social Security amount get added? I’ve not heard one word about that. In June, I started calling. The Social Security Administration said I had to apply for it. The OPM agent said it was automatic after they figured out the offset amount, but nothing from OPM suggests that they…
