Q. I have 12 years of military service that I bought back. I have 16 years in federal law enforcement, with that law enforcement coverage as primary retirement coverage. I just turned 52 and have been in federal service since April 27, 1997. My position was just reclassified within my agency and is now covered under secondary law enforcement retirement coverage. Do I have sufficient time in to retire immediately now that I am covered under secondary law enforcement retirement, or do I need to still work another four years to get 20 in the position?

Q. I have 30 years of federal service as a WG-12. I am 52 years old. If I am nonretained in the Air National Guard, will I get my FERS retirement and my Supplemental Security Income? It is my understanding that if I’m over 50 years old with 30 years of service, I should receive both with no penalty.

Q. My husband has a rare syndrome, and his prognosis is only a couple years. He cannot be left alone during the day, and I cannot afford to pay someone to stay with him all day. I am age 50, and a GG-13 Step 7 with 15 years of government service (four years of active-duty time is included in this). Can I retire now (I am under FERS) and still keep my health insurance? What would I receive in pension, and what would be the cost of keeping my health insurance as I cannot afford to lose it due to…

Q. I have worked for the Postal Service for 26 years. I just turned 50. I am under FERS. If I decided to retire at the end of the year, how would I calculate what my annuity will be? Additionally, if there were another early-out offer from the Postal Service, how would I benefit from that rather than retiring outside of the offer?

Q. I am nearing 20 years of service and am over 56 years old. As of March 6, 2014, I will have 20 years of federal service and, as of March 31, a total of 20 years, five months and 16 days counting all of my creditable sick leave. To apply for Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay, do I first have to be retirement eligible? Am I able to adjust my retirement date and still keep 20 years service by applying unused sick days, or are they only attached to the end of my total federal service time?

Q. I am in CSRS offset, and I am eligible to retire now. I turned 66 on April 8. I started collecting Social Security benefits as of Jan. 1 and continue to work. How will my retirement calculation change when I retire?  Most, but not all, of the Social Security benefits were earned while I was under CSRS offset. I copied the following excerpt from “Ask the Experts”: “In the year you reached your full retirement age, it would be reduced by $1 out of every $3 you earned. After that, there wouldn’t be any reduction.” I don’t understand what…
