Q. I will be 62 in February and plan on retiring. I joined the Navy in 1970. Since then, I have two years and nine months of active duty, two years of inactive Navy, 10 years of active Naval Reserve and 13 years of active Naval Reserve for a total of 25 years and eight months. I was placed on the Naval Reserve retired list in February 1999. I would be eligible for reserve retirement when I turned 60, which was February 2012. Authorization for retirement is per references 10 U.S.C. 12731, 12732, 12733, and 12739. In May 2001, I…

Q. I work for the Postal Service with 29 years as of Aug. 4, and 10½ with civil service for the Navy. I am 59 years old, a postmaster EAS-11 office which is on the downsize or closure list. I do not want to transfer or have to drive 50 miles to another office. If I am forced to retire under discontinued service retirement, does my insurance that I already have continue?

Q. I retired from the Postal Service in October 2008. My wife is now getting Medicare. Can I remove her from my insurance and only claim myself as a single? I also would like to know what I’m paying for my family coverage now and what I would pay if I claim as a single. Can you advise me on how to go about or whom to contact?

Q. I have been with the Postal Service for 24 years, and I have an action for removal for nonperformance looming over me and a pending disability retirement application with the Office of Personnel Management. If I get terminated before OPM makes its decision, will that guarantee approval of disability retirement? What about insurance? If I get terminated, can I make some kind of arrangements to keep my health and life insurance? I must keep my health insurance with this medical condition and my family. I also need to hold on to my life insurance since my history is blotted.

Q. I am a 49-year-old, 27-year employee postmaster who is a FERS employee and is in the process of completing disability paperwork and Social Security disability paperwork. There is also a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority offer out there that I need to make a decision on by Nov. 29. If I take the VERA and I’m approved for my disability retirement by the Office of Personnel Management, can I change my retirement to the disability retirement? Also, if I take the VERA, can I still qualify for disability Social Security benefits?

Q. I took the Voluntary Early Retirement Authority on Jan. 31 at my minimum retirement age. I had 26 years at the Postal Service under FERS. After 16 years of marriage, I became a widow. The only income I have is my annuity and the special retirement supplement from the Office of Personnel Management. Will I be eligible to receive Social Security benefits from husband at 60, and will they end at 62? When I turn 62, my supplement will end. I have $190,000 in the L2020 fund. Would it be beneficial to me to start receiving money from my…
